Abstract: Pioniera del cinema svizzero, Isa Hesse-Rabinovitch (1917-2003) segue per tutta la vita una strada non convenzionale. Figlia di immigrati ebrei-russi, cresce a Zurigo e sposa un figlio di Hermann Hesse, dal quale ha tre figli. Influenzata dall’opera artistica dei genitori, lavora dapprima come illustratrice e poi come reporter e fotografa, difendendo sempre la propria indipendenza. A cinquant’anni inizia a realizzare film. I suoi primi cortometraggi sperimentali le valgono inviti a festival del cinema dove suscitano grande clamore. Sulla scena cinematografica della Svizzera degli anni '70, fortemente dominata dagli uomini, deve lottare per poter realizzare le sue opere poetiche. Isa però continua imperterrita il suo lavoro sperimentale e, a 67 anni, si cimenta con un nuovo mezzo: il video. Ne nasce un’opera cinematografica e video tanto varia quanto estemporanea.
A pioneer of Swiss cinema, Isa Hesse-Rabinovitch (1917-2003) followed an unconventional path throughout her life. The daughter of Jewish-Russian immigrants, she grew up in Zurich and married a son of Hermann Hesse by whom she had three children. Influenced by her parents' artistic work, she first worked as an illustrator and then as a reporter and photographer, always defending her independence. At the age of fifty she began to make films. Her first experimental short films earned her invitations to film festivals abroad, where they caused a sensation. In the Swiss film scene of the 1970s, which was heavily dominated by men, she had to struggle to make her poetic works. But Isa continued her experimental work undaunted and, at the age of 67, tried her hand at a new medium: video. The result is a film and video work that is as varied as it is impromptu.
