Abstract: Ingelore Herz Honigstein è nata nel 1924 da genitori ebrei a Kuppenheim, in Germania. È sorda dalla nascita. Come espressione del loro imbarazzo per la figlia muta, i genitori la ignorano e non fanno alcun tentativo di comunicare con lei. Viene mandata da vari tutori dai quali impara le forme più rudimentali di linguaggio. A 6 anni pronuncia la prima parola. A 12 finalmente riesce a costruire una frase completa. A 13 anni, Ingelore entra in prima elementare e, per la prima volta, viene in contatto con altri bambini non udenti. La sua breve educazione viene interrotta dalla Kristalnact, quando viene espulsa dalla scuola. Attraverso i suoi occhi vediamo i cambiamenti nei suoi compagni di classe e negli atteggiamenti dei vicini. Assiste al prelievo e al rilascio di suo padre da Dachau, viene violentata dai cadetti nazisti per le strade di Berlino, negozia per la sua vita con un funzionario insensibile al consolato americano di Stoccarda e infine fugge dalla Germania per gli Stati Uniti, dove scopre di essere rimasta incinta a causa dello stupro. Ingelore Herz Honigstein was born in 1924 to Jewish parents in Kuppenheim, Germany. She has been deaf since birth. As an expression of their embarrassment over their mute daughter, her parents ignored her and made no attempt to communicate with her. She is sent to various tutors from whom she learns the most rudimentary forms of language. At the age of six she pronounces her first word. At 12 she finally manages to construct a complete sentence. At the age of 13, Ingelore enters first grade and, for the first time, comes into contact with other deaf children. Her brief education is interrupted by the Kristalnact, when she is expelled from school. Through her eyes we see the changes in her classmates and the attitudes of her neighbours. She witnesses the removal and release of her father from Dachau, is raped by Nazi cadets on the streets of Berlin, negotiates for her life with an insensitive official at the American consulate in Stuttgart, and finally flees Germany for the United States, where she discovers she has become pregnant as a result of the rape. Her incredible life makes her an extraordinary teacher. The film includes a first-person interview with Ingelore who alternates between using her voice and sign language. dramatic. The film also uses a great deal of archival footage and four simple re creations of her story.
