Abstract: Come sopravvive l'arte in un periodo di oppressione? Sotto il regime sovietico gli artisti fedeli alla propria visione vengono perseguitati, giustiziati, mandati nei manicomi o nei Gulag. La loro condizione ispira il giovane Igor Savitsky. Finge di comprare opere d'arte approvate dallo Stato, ma invece recupera 40.000 opere proibite e crea con esse un museo nel deserto dell'Uzbekistan, lontano dagli sempre occhi vigili del KGB. Savitsky accumula un mix eclettico di arte russa d'avanguardia. Ma la sua più grande scoperta è una scuola sconosciuta di artisti che si stabilisce in Uzbekistan dopo la rivoluzione russa del 1917, incontrando la cultura islamica, per loro esotica come Tahiti lo era per Gauguin. Gli attori Ben Kingsley, Sally Field e Ed Asner danno voce ai diari e alle lettere di Savitsky e dei suoi artisti. Intervallato da ricordi dei loro discendenti da rari filmati d'archivio, il film ci porta al cospetto di un sacrificio drammatico compiuto in nome della libertà creativa.
How does art survive in a time of oppression? Under the Soviet regime, artists who were faithful to their vision were persecuted, executed, sent to asylums or the Gulag. Their plight inspires the young Igor Savitsky. He pretends to buy state-approved artworks, but instead retrieves 40,000 forbidden works and creates a museum with them in the desert of Uzbekistan, far from the ever-watchful eyes of the KGB. Savitsky accumulates an eclectic mix of avant-garde Russian art. But his greatest discovery is an unknown school of artists who settled in Uzbekistan after the Russian revolution of 1917, encountering Islamic culture as exotic to them as Tahiti was to Gauguin. Actors Ben Kingsley, Sally Field and Ed Asner give voice to the diaries and letters of Savitsky and his artists. Interspersed with recollections of their descendants from rare archive footage, the film brings us face to face with a dramatic sacrifice made in the name of creative freedom.
