Abstract: Mia nonna Fira, 95 anni, ha avuto due figli che portano i nomi di suo padre e di suo fratello. Il maggiore, mio padre, è nato in un campo profughi in Germania nel febbraio 1946 ed è stato allattato al seno. Recentemente mia nonna ha adottato una nuova nipote, Firita, una peruviana di 4 anni, nata e cresciuta nella vecchia casa di mia nonna e che conosce l'Olocausto quasi quanto me. Sua madre, Magna, si prende cura di mia nonna da oltre 12 anni. Oltre all'evidente gioia che una vecchia signora trae dal veder fiorire una giovane vita, Fira ha un vecchio conto da saldare: vorrebbe dare a Firita una vita normale, proprio come ha fatto Stacha, la signora polacca che le ha salvata la vita nascondendo Fira e sua madre per più di due anni in casa sua durante le persecuzioni antisemite.
My 95-year-old grandmother Fira had two children named after her father and brother. The eldest, my father, was born in a refugee camp in Germany in February 1946 and was breastfed. Recently, my grandmother adopted a new granddaughter, Firita, a 4-year-old Peruvian girl who was born and raised in my grandmother's old house and who knows the Holocaust almost as well as I do. Her mother, Magna, has been taking care of my grandmother for over 12 years. Apart from the obvious joy an old woman derives from seeing a young life blossom, Fira has an old score to settle: she would like to give Firita a normal life, just as Stacha, the Polish lady who saved her life by hiding Fira and her mother for more than two years in her house during the anti-Semitic persecution, did.
