Abstract: Questo documentario rappresenta il tentativo di raccontare la vera storia dietro uno dei pił misteriosi film di propaganda nazista girato nel ghetto di Varsavia. Girato poco tempo prima della deportazione degli abitanti del ghetto, si tratta di un film muto - ancora a livello di rough-cut - che giustappone sequenze inscenate da comparse ebree che vivono in condizioni lussuose con immagini agghiaccianti che non hanno richiesto alcuna messa in scena. Nel dopoguerra registi e musei usarono le immagini del film come illustrazioni oggettive delle condizioni che avevano raccolto da testimoni. Poche persone erano a conoscenza del modo cinico in cui queste immagini erano state realizzate e della vera, per quanto inconcepibile, testimonianza in esse contenuta. L'inganno cinematografico era stato dimenticato e le immagini in bianco e nero furono scambiate per veritą storica. Il documentario intreccia le voci dai diari degli abitanti del ghetto al tempo delle riprese, le testimonianze di alcuni sopravvissuti ancora in vita e il protocollo dell'interrogatorio di uno dei cameraman tedeschi.
This documentary is an attempt to tell the true story behind one of the most mysterious Nazi propaganda films shot in the Warsaw ghetto. Filmed shortly before the deportation of the ghetto inhabitants, it is a silent film - still in rough-cut - that juxtaposes sequences staged by Jewish extras living in luxurious conditions with chilling images that required no staging. Post-war filmmakers and museums used the film images as objective illustrations of the conditions they had collected from witnesses. Few people were aware of the cynical way in which these images were made and the true, albeit inconceivable, testimony they contained. The cinematic deception had been forgotten and the black and white images were mistaken for historical truth. The documentary weaves together the voices from the diaries of the ghetto inhabitants at the time of the filming, the testimonies of some survivors still alive and the interrogation protocol of one of the German cameramen.
