Abstract: Ad un certo punto della loro vita Rita e Maria Rosa scoprono di essere figlie adottive. Indagando sul proprio passato, e trascorsa buona parte della loro esistenza ignare l’una dell’altra, si imbattono in una clamorosa rivelazione: sono sorelle. Le loro ricerche faranno piena luce sulla vicenda tragica della loro madre, Augusta Romegialli. Augusta, sposata con cinque figli, viveva con la famiglia a Morbegno, vicino al confine svizzero. In tempo di guerra si unisce a un gruppo partigiano per aiutare i prigionieri alleati a rifugiarsi in Svizzera. Arrestata dalla milizia fascista, viene deportata ad Auschwitz, Dachau, Mauthausen e, infine, trasferita in un campo di punizione a Graz, in Austria. Durante uno di questi trasferimenti subisce lo stupro da parte di un ufficiale tedesco. Nel sottocampo di Graz dà alla luce Maria Rosa, e con lei riesce miracolosamente a fuggire nel corso di un bombardamento. Ma la fine della guerra non significa la fine delle sue tribolazioni. Il marito muore precocemente, la sua città e persino i suoi parenti la rifiutano. Augusta è costretta a lasciare Maria Rosa ad una famiglia adottiva, e gli altri cinque figli in orfanotrofio. Si trasferisce a Milano, dove cerca di ricostruirsi una vita. Incontra un altro uomo e da questa relazione nasce un’altra bimba, Rita. Ma l’insorgere di una grave depressione mina definitivamente la sua salute. Abbandonata da tutti, Augusta muore, nel 1955, in un ospedale psichiatrico di Sondrio. Circa quaranta anni dopo, Maria Rosa e Rita, quando finalmente si incontrano, decidono di rivisitare insieme i luoghi dove mamma Augusta aveva vissuto.
At a certain point in their lives, Rita and Maria Rosa discover that they are adopted daughters. Investigating their past, and spending a good part of their lives unaware of each other, they come across a resounding revelation: they are sisters. Their search will shed full light on the tragic story of their mother, Augusta Romegialli. Augusta, married with five children, lived with her family in Morbegno, near the Swiss border. During the war, she joined a partisan group to help allied prisoners take refuge in Switzerland. Arrested by the fascist militia, she was deported to Auschwitz, Dachau, Mauthausen and finally transferred to a punishment camp in Graz, Austria. During one of these transfers she was raped by a German officer. In the sub-camp in Graz she gave birth to Maria Rosa, and miraculously managed to escape with her during a bombing raid. But the end of the war does not mean the end of her tribulations. Her husband dies prematurely, her town and even her relatives reject her. Augusta is forced to leave Maria Rosa to an adoptive family, and her five other children to an orphanage. She moves to Milan, where she tries to rebuild her life. She meets another man and from this relationship another child, Rita, is born. But the onset of severe depression permanently undermines her health. Abandoned by everyone, Augusta dies in a psychiatric hospital in Sondrio in 1955. Some forty years later, when Maria Rosa and Rita finally meet, they decide to revisit together the places where mother Augusta had lived.
